SRINAGAR Gerrit Cole Jersey , Indian-controlled Kashmir, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Voting for the fourth phase of five-phase staggered local elections in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir began Sunday morning amid stringent security measures, officials said.


The voting began at 8:00 a.m. (local time) and would end at 4: 00 p.m..


"Voting for the fourth phase of Assembly (the region's lawmaking body) elections has commenced today in 18 constituencies spread across four districts of Srinagar, Anantnag, Shopian and Samba Jose Altuve Jersey ," a government spokesman said.


Voting began on a sluggish note but reports pouring in said it was picking up steadily.


"Despite severe cold, people were seen marching towards the polling booths and long queues of electorate were seen outside the polling booths to exercise their franchise," the spokesman said.


According to the Indian election commission over 1.4 million voters are likely to cast votes in 1,890 polling stations.


Officials said 182 candidates including two chief ministerial aspirants Omar Abdullah and Mufti Mohammed Sayeed were in fray in Sunday's polls.


Election officials said up to 10:00 a.m. about 10 percent turnout was recorded from the poll-bound constituencies.


The first two phases recorded a huge turnout of over 70 percent across the region, whereas the third phase recorded over 58 percent.


Authorities have made adequate security arrangements and deployed thousands of policemen and India's paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in the poll-bound areas to prevent any sort of disruption in voting.


India has sent 520 additional companies of paramilitary troops to strengthen the security grid during the elections.


Separatist groups and militants opposing New Delhi's rule in the region reject Indian elections and have urged people to boycott the exercise.


Police have detained several separatist leaders and dozens of their supporters ahead of elections to prevent them from launching boycott campaigns.


Indian-controlled Kashmir is a Muslim majority region. Though regional parties National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party usually have main role in government making Carlos Correa Jersey , this year India's Bharatiya Janata Party is aiming at winning 44 plus seats in the 87-strong assembly. Congress party, too, has a support base in the region.


The right-wing Hindu nationalist party banks heavily on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's charisma and is promoting it through an aggressive media campaign in print and electronic media to woo the region's voters to achieve what it describes as "mission 44 plus."


On Saturday Modi addressed an election rally in Kathua and urged people to end dynastic rule in the region and vote for his party.
