DENVER (AP) — Viewed as a power pitcher Kris Bryant Jersey , Jon Gray always felt he needed to rely on strikeouts. He altered that thinking. This is Jon Gray: Version 2.0.Gray threw effectively into the seventh inning and Ian Desmond hit a two-run triple in the sixth, leading the Colorado Rockies to a 6-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night.“Jon wasn’t as crisp as we’ve seen him, but yet he pitched into the seventh inning,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. All part of his change. He was sent to the minors earlier this season to hone his command and Gray returned a different pitcher. He doesn’t rely on his fastball as much as he placed more faith in his breaking pitches.“It’s more of a controlled aggression than being aggressive,” Gray explained. “I’m not trying to make it nasty and throw it under their bat. I’m trying to make a quality pitch that’s sharp, that’s in the strike zone, but keeping it out of the heart of the plate.”Gray (10-7) went 6 1/3 innings and allowed two runs before running out of steam and turning it over to the bullpen. He’s now 3-0 with a 2.59 ERA over seven starts since his recall from Triple-A Albuquerque.“I hit the reset button,” Gray said. After allowing a run in the first, Gray settled into a groove against a Padres team that was missing infielder Wil Myers after he was a late scratch. Myers sustained a cut on his nose when a grounder hit him in the face while he was fielding during batting practice.Padres manager Andy Green said after the game there was no concussion.“He definitely took a hard one off the face. I don’t know that he was ever pretty but he’s definitely not pretty right now,” Green said. “Probably down (Thursday) and hope we can get him back in rhythm in L.A.”Myers was scheduled to make his eighth start at third base as the Padres experimented with sliding the veteran first baseman across the infield. Instead, Cory Spangenberg moved to third and Jose Pirela played second.Rockies catcher Tony Wolters added an RBI triple and a run-scoring sacrifice fly for the rolling Rockies, who began the day 1 1/2 games behind NL West-leading Arizona.Jacob Nix (1-2) turned in a solid outing in his first career road start. He allowed three runs over five innings.“There’s still very much to like and a lot to look forward to,” Green said of his right-hander.The Rockies improved to 24-24 against teams with a losing record. In contrast, they’re 45-33 versus those at or above the .500 mark.“It shows you why you can’t sleep on anybody http://www.chicagocubsteamshop.com/authentic-addison-russell-jersey ,” said Carlos Gonzalez, who had an RBI single in the first.TRAINER’S ROOMPadres: INF Christian Villanueva has a fractured finger and will be placed on the disabled list, Green said.ROSTER MOVEThe New York Yankees acquired catcher Chris Rabago off waivers from the Rockies and optioned him to Double-A Trenton. The move freed up a spot on the 40-man roster for the Rockies, which could potentially be used to add Matt Holliday. The slugger is currently hitting .346 with Triple-A Albuquerque.GONE TO THE DOGSIt was a “ruff” night as a parade of pooches made their way around the field before the game as part of a promotion called “Bark at the Park.”“This is the tail end of the dog days” of summer, Black joked. “This is the back end of the dog days.”TROUBLESOME INNINGSpangenberg had an RBI double in the first, which has turned into a problematic inning for the Rockies. The starting pitchers have allowed 110 runs in the opening inning this season.START OF SOMETHINGThe Rockies have now won each of Gray’s last nine starts. It matches Ubaldo Jimenez’s stretch in 2010 for the team’s longest win streak during a pitcher’s starts in franchise history.THIS & THATGray was cruising along, retiring 12 straight, before SS Freddy Galvis lined a solo homer in the seventh. … Desmond scored two runs and stole a base.UP NEXTPadres LHP Joey Lucchesi (6-7, 3.79 ERA) makes his fourth career start against Colorado on Thursday. The Rockies counter with LHP Kyle Freeland (11-7, 2.96). He’s 7-2 with a 2.22 ERA in 11 starts at home. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Masahiro Tanaka had another poor outing in his final start before the playoffs.Tanaka gave up four runs and six hits over four-plus innings in in the New York Yankees‘ 8-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night.“It just comes down to the mechanics,” Tanaka said through a translator. “I wasn’t able to locate my pitches the way I wanted to.”New York’s lead over Oakland for home-field advantage in the AL wild-card game on Oct. 3 was cut to 1½ games, with the Yankees holding the tiebreaker.Yankees manager Aaron Boone hasn’t decided whether Tanaka, J.A. Happ or Luis Severino will start against the A’s.“A lot of people ask me that http://www.chicagocubsteamshop.com/authentic-sammy-sosa-jersey , friends, family, all that, and honestly I have no idea,” Boone said before the game.New York rallied for four runs in the ninth against Sergio Romo, who struggled to get four outs for his 24th save.“They’re tough. They’re talented,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said.Aaron Judge hit a bases-loaded RBI single before Luke Voit hit a two-run off the center-field wall that Mallex Smith nearly caught. Judge held up, forcing Voit to only reach first. After Giancarlo Stanton had a run-scoring infield single, Romo retired Tyler Wade on a flyout and Miguel Andujar on a popout.“I’m proud of the way the guys were fighting,” Judge said. “Games like that will help us down the stretch and the postseason.”Tanaka (12-6) was coming off a four-inning start last Thursday in which he allowed five runs and eight hits during an 11-6 loss to Boston.“Regardless of how I pitched the last two games, it’s something that’s out of my control, so I guess I don’t really have an opinion on that,” Tanaka said of the wild-card game.Tampa Bay’s Kevin Kiermaier was hit by Tanaka’s pitch in the first and left two innings later with what X-rays determined was a hairline fracture of the right foot. The center fielder made a running catch on Brett Gardner’s drive during the second.Kiermaier missed 57 games this season with a torn right thumb ligament.“What a way for my year to end,” Kiermaier said. “That’s my 2018 in a nutshell.”After falling behind by three Joe Maddon Jersey , the Rays went up 4-3 on Tommy Pham’s third-inning solo homer off Tanaka. Pham extended his career-best, on-base streak to 28 games, the longest active run in the AL. He has a hit in 27 of them.Reliever Yonny Chirinos (5-5) went four scoreless innings and worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fifth when Stanton grounded into a double play. Both teams scored three times in a first inning that lasted 40 minutes and saw Tampa Bay’s Ryne Stanek (30) and Tanaka (36) combine for 66 pitches.Neil Walker hit a three-run homer , while Tanaka walked one, hit a batter, allowed three hits and was charged with an error on an errant throw to second base after fielding C.J. Cron’s grounder between the mound and the first-base line.Walker was hit on the shin by pitched ball in the eighth and was replaced by Wade. X-rays were negative.Matt Duffy, who scored on Tanaka’s error, left after the inning with right quadriceps tightness.Cron had an RBI double in a four-run eighth off David Robertson. The inning included Gary Sanchez’s major league-leading 18th passed ball, which raised his two-year total to 34.Robertson joined Mariano Rivera (1,115) and Dave Righetti (522) as the only pitchers to make 500 appearances with the Yankees. It was the eighth time the Yankees have lost when scoring seven or more runs.TRAINER’S ROOMYankees: SS Didi Gregorius (right wrist) resumed baseball activities and might return this weekend. … CF Aaron Hicks (left hamstring) will likely start Friday. … INF Gleyber Torres (hip/groin) struck out as a pinch-hitter in the sixth.Rays: 1B/DH Ji-Man Choi sat out after experiencing concussion-like symptoms and cutting his left ear during a play at the plate Tuesday. “Nothing more than stitches in his ear,” Cash said.UP NEXTLHP CC Sabathia (8-7) could be making his final regular-season start for the Yankees on Thursday. He needs seven innings to reach 155 and earn a $500,000 bonus. The Rays will use relievers.
