Buying bulk email lists might seem like an easy way to go. After all, you want your mailing list to grow fast, and building a list by generating leads yourself can take time, right? So why shouldn't you speed up the process by buying a list of email addresses.

Well, here are three good reasons you should stay away from bulk email lists.

1. The Email Addresses Might Not Be Legit

When you buy bulk email lists, more often than not, there isn't much you can do to check out the list before handing over your money. And, unfortunately, there are people out there who wouldn't think twice about selling you a list of fake email addresses just to make a quick buck. So the emails on such a list might either be so old no one is using them anymore, or the seller might have just made them up. In any case, when you pay for such a list, you will pretty much be giving someone your hard earned money and getting nothing in return. And the chances of you being able to get your money back are slim to none.

2. The Leads Might Not Be Targeted

The point of building a mailing list in your niche is having targeted leads, people who are interested enough in the types of products you are promoting to actually buy them. When you are looking to buy bulk email lists, the seller will no doubt promise you that the leads on that list are targeted. But there is really no way for you to know for sure. For all you know, only a handful of people on the list would be interested in buying the golfing product or dog training videos you are promoting. Which would mean most of the email addresses you paid for were useless to you?

3. The Lead on the List Might Not Want to Be Promoted To

When a subscriber signs up to your mailing list, they are giving you permission to send messages to them. Not only are they more likely to actually read your messages (and read about the products you are promoting), they are less likely to mark your messages as spam.

The same isn't necessarily true of the leads on a bulk email lists. Rather than actually being interested of buying through you, they just might be annoyed, and would end up deleting your messages without ever reading them. And really why go through all that trouble when you can build your own email list.

One of my internet marketing friends explained to me, "Opt email lists are where the money's at." My friend has a slight stutter - I'm not making fun of him, it's just a fact - and the word "opt" bounced around like a tennis ball. This heightened my confusion. I didn't know what his stinkin' point was. "My point? Build a list. Dude, you gotta build your opt email lists." Build, as in construct? That sounded difficult. Like I'd have to wear a hard hat, be involved in heavy lifting. "No, dude, I'm talking about building opt email lists! Like, with an autoresponder."

I'm not working to build anything but my floundering self-esteem, I wanted to tell him. But I didn't.

More time went by and he brought it up again. "You're wasting all this time and stuff reinventing the wheel. You do all this crap to get customers to your website, right? Let's say they buy from you, then what happens? Poof! They leave! They disappear! You have to start all over again and work hard to get another customer. But if you have opt email lists, you can send emails to the customer, like, repeatedly. With more offers and stuff."

When he brought it up a third and final time, he grimly offered a statistic. He said most of the time, customers 7 times before they're ready to buy. Once a potential customer leaves your website without buying, it's not likely they'll come back. Even if they like what you're selling and just want to take a little time to think about it, they'll probably get busy and forget your website's URL. Begrudgingly, I admitted that he was right.

So I decided to start building these opt email lists he kept blabbing about. Actually, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I mean, it wasn't glamorous or anything, but it wasn't a nightmare. Still, it's too bad my persistent friend hadn't given me a few tips - it would have saved me the trial and error.

(By the way, the first thing you'll need is an autoresponder. Buy a program or subscribe to a service like GetResponse - no, I'm not getting paid by GetResponse. I use them and like them, and they're really affordable.)

So here they are - those tips I was just talking about - in a nutshell:

*Make It Easy For People To Join Your Opt Email Lists

No one wants to have to work to get what you're giving away. The easier, the better. If you have a newsletter, a blog, a website, give your visitors a break. Don't make them hunt for your opt email sign-up form. Put it close to content, above the fold. Then talk about the benefits of signing up. Make it enticing with a statement like "secrets and tips you wont find elsewhere!"

*A Free eBook Or Report Can Entice People To Join Your Opt Email Lists

You don't have to write a stinkin' novel, you can write as little as 5 pages if you write a report. Give this report away on your website or landing page in exchange for your potential customer's email address. You do a little work, but the return can be enormous. Same with an eBook - it doesn't need to be. Remembrance of Things Past. However long it is, don't use some skanky free report or eBook that's already been all over the web. Giving away junk will make people unsubscribe from your list. Write your own stuff or pay someone to do it.
