Kirk Cousins may never be as good as Aaron Rodgers. But for a night he was good enough
Brett Favre Jersey , and won a night game for a change. The Vikings quarterback was sharp in their 24-17 win over the Packers, earning his money and putting his team in good position for the final month of the season. He finished 29-of-38 for 342 yards and three touchdowns, and made the timely plays when he needed them. It was more of an efficient night than eye-popping, but he he was clearly the better quarterback of the two.It was his fifth win in 17 tries in prime time, but more importantly, it puts the Vikings (6-4-1) in the best spot for the top wild card berth in the NFC.Here are five more things we learned during Sunday Night Football:1. In the past, it has been easy to assume that given enough time, Rodgers was good enough to drag a sub-standard team to a win.The reality at the moment is that Rodgers is not playing to his own standards, and he clearly doesn’t have the kind of help he needs. He missed throws badly in the late stages of the game, the kind of plays we’re not conditioned to expect from him.The first part of the problem is likely physical, as Rodgers hasn’t looked the same since his knee injury earlier this season. The kinds of plays where he buys time to make throws downfield are now becoming sacks, as he isn’t able to avoid the rush long enough or evade it when it gets close. There’s also more pressure when left tackle David Bakhtiari is finishing the game on the bench, as it appeared his knee problems flared up, leaving Jason Spriggs to finish for him.But there are also fundamental problems with the Packers, that go beyond his health or the injuries that have thinned them out. He doesn’t seem to have complete trust in his coaches or targets on the field, and that has left them closer to a top-10 pick than a playoff berth.2. Coaches can be stubborn people. After taking so much criticism for punting last week, Packers coach Mike McCarthy decided to go for a fourth down this time. But his decision was to plow running back Aaron Jones straight into the middle of the line during the third quarter, which the Vikings were waiting for.It wasn’t a very imaginative call
Paul Hornung Jersey , and certainly the one that put the least responsibility on his best player. If that’s the kind of decision-making he’s going to employ on fourth downs, he’ll at least get people to stop criticizing the decision to go or not.At least Mike Zimmer didn’t let his pride get in the way. He told NBC’s Michele Tafoya at halftime he wasn’t going to let the game be decided by kicker Dan Bailey, after Bailey missed two field goals in the first half. Of course, he should have gotten a third chance at the second one, since there was a penalty for at least running into him that wasn’t called. But late in the third, Zimmer deigned to let Bailey try a 37-yarder, and he hit it to give the Vikings the lead.3. The Vikings might enjoy the win, though seeing cornerback Xavier Rhodes leave the game late was a concern as they head down the stretch.Rhodes is their best cover player, and with games coming up immediately against the Patriots and Packers (and what they hope are future playoff dates), it leaves a significant question mark. He grabbed at his hamstring as soon as he went down, and hobbled slowly off the field. They got linebacker Anthony Barr back on the field Sunday, but need to be well because they’ve already given away most of their margin of error.4. Packers tight end Jimmy Graham was active and dressed, but he didn’t do much. After breaking his thumb last week, he played with his left hand in a glove and splinted and taped. He wasn’t much use as a run-blocker, as you might imagine, and Marcedes Lewis got most of the work. He was targeted four times, and caught two passes for 34 yards. With so many injuries at wide receiver, the Packers badly need Graham (or somebody who can make a play downfield) if they’re going to salvage this season.5. Packers rookie cornerback Jaire Alexander has made some impressive plays this year. But his most impressive may have been in the first half.Alexander chucked Vikings wideout Adam Thielen backward into Stefon Diggs
Bart Starr Jersey , forcing Diggs into a loss.It was a physical play for a guy better known for his downfield coverage skills, and the kind of play that the Packers think he can build on.Week 5 NFC North Fantasy Football Sits/Starts: Two games, plenty of starts The Chicago Bears have a bye this week and the Green Bay Packers take on the Lions of Detroit, so the NFC North battles will be limited to two contests this week. The Vikings get an NFC Championship game rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles. With the Vikings at 1-2-1 and the Eagles at 2-2, both have come out of the gate under-performing. I see this game being a crossroads of sorts for both teams. Become the team that you want to be for the remainder of the season, or fold. Meanwhile at Ford Field, the Packers will be fighting to keep pace with the Bears in the division and the Lions will try to avoid bottoming out under new head coach Matt Patricia. Let’s take a look at who has the best chance to help your teams this week.Green Bay Packers @ Detroit LionsStart: Aaron Jones, RB If you were bold enough to draft Jones in redraft leagues and wait it out until he got his feet back following suspension, I’m hopeful this is when it starts to pay off. Jones was a strong play last week already and should be a legitimate flex play or low-end RB2 play this week. In two games, Jones is averaging 6.3 yards per carry and even impressed with a blitz pickup against the Bills last week. The knock has been that he’s not a strong pass blocker and Jamaal Williams is better at that, but if Jones continues to pick up those blocks and have the ability to pick up first downs in two carries, he should 100% be the workhorse. With Randall Cobb still on the injury report, Ty Montgomery is best served at picking up the slack in the passing game and not taking away carries. Be comfortable starting Jones against the team that ranks last in rushing yards allowed per game. Start: Kerryon Johnson, RBFeels like it could be a good day for running backs. Not only have the Packers made Adrian Peterson look like 2008 Adrian Peterson two weeks ago, but there were spurts in Week 1 where Jordan Howard looked like he was ready to run wild over the Packers defense. Green Bay is ranked 18th in rushing yards allowed per game, but their rush rank by DVOA is 26th. Johnson has largely split carries with LeGarrette Blount, but his situation is similar to that of Aaron Jones’ in terms of being able to do more with those carries. Johnson is averaging 5.7 yards per carry on the season while Blount is averaging a pedestrian 2.7.Sit: Matt Stafford, QBStafford has a great receiving corps at his disposal
Ray Nitschke Jersey , but that doesn’t make him infallible. He put together his first game of the season last week with double-digit yards per completion. However, Dallas is the 26th-ranked team in DVOA against the pass while the Packers are quietly ranked 10th, allowing about 241 passing yards per game. Stafford’s career averages in 15 games against Green Bay are 298 yards per game and roughly two TD’s per contest, but he also averages 1.5 interceptions.Currently, Stafford is the 17th-ranked fantasy quarterback averaging 17.7 ppg. Which is fine, but unless you’re in a two-QB league, there are better options. Minnesota Vikings @ Philadelphia EaglesStart: Jay Ajayi, RBAfter missing a week with a small fracture in his back, Ajayi came back to put together a respectable 15 carries for 70 yards. The back injury worries me a little bit, but apparently it’s something he’s just going to play through with a little pain. I still like Ajayi this week. With Darren Sproles and Corey Clement still nursing injuries, the timeshare at running back last week was 75% Ajayi and 25% Wendell Smallwood (five carries). Minnesota is currently ranked 30th out of 32 teams against running backs. They’ve struggled to keep up with them and have allowed 3.9 yards per carry and over 100 yards per game to opposing running backs. Which brings me to my sit for this game.Sit: Vikings defenseThe Vikings defense is still 90% owned in ESPN leagues, but rank 21st at the position with 6.8 points per game. Losing Everson Griffin is a tough one to swallow and the Vikings offense isn’t making things easier on the defense. Against the Bills, sure, they got walloped by a bad team, but the Vikings only allowed 292 yards on D. Poor field position and bad secondary play has led the defense to be placed in compromising positions. Per Football Outsiders, the Vikings are ranked 28th in DVOA against tight ends and 30th in DVOA against running backs. Both are positions that the Eagles can readily exploit with Ajayi and Zach Ertz.
