Recapping Australian Privacy Awareness Week
POSTED ON 05/17/2019 IN GENERAL
Today, Privacy Awareness Week in Australia comes to an end. And in 2019, the initiative has never been more relevant. From misguided laws to overzealous data collection and questionable security standards, we need to actively seek out best privacy practices ourselves. Here’s everything you need to know about this past week’s event.

What is Privacy Awareness Week?
Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) is an annual initiative that aims to spread awareness of privacy issues and stress the importance of personal data protection. It is sponsored by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) in conjunction with the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities forum. This year’s initiative began on May 12 and ends today, May 18. The theme was “Don’t be in the Dark on Privacy.”

PAW 2019 focused on five key privacy priorities:

Data Breaches
Online Security
Your Credit Information
Health Information
Your Data
How to Maintain Your Privacy After PAW
While PAW is coming to a close, privacy must be tended to daily. One way to do so is by visiting the official PAW website. Here, you’ll be able to access resources related to Privacy Awareness Week’s five privacy priorities, and review initiatives from previous years.

Another way to maintain Privacy Awareness Week’s aims year-round is by offering support to non-profit organizations. Two great options are Electronic Frontiers Australia (Twitter | Facebook) and Digital Rights Watch (Twitter | Facebook). The EFA’s work centers on a number of policy issues, including copyright, privacy and surveillance, censorship and free speech, and encryption; according to their mission statement, DFA aims “to ensure that Australian citizens are equipped, empowered and enabled to uphold their digital rights.” To stay up to date on their campaigns, follow their social accounts; to join the organizations or make a donation, visit their websites.

Finally, the best way to carry out the spirit of Privacy Awareness Week is to be proactive about your own data security, even after 2019’s initiative ends. One of the ways to do this is with a VPN, like RitaVPN. RitaVPN protects your privacy by encrypting your internet traffic and disguising your IP address. This prevents others from spying on your online activity and discerning your location.
