A thermal protector, also known as a temperature switch, is a protective switching device inside the motor, which is designed to prevent internal overheating in the event of a motor failure. This overheating usually occurs when the motor is overloaded, the bearings are stuck, preventing it from turning, or the motor cannot start properly. A faulty motor starting winding may result in a failed start.
Thermal protectors consist of one or more thermal sensing elements built into the motor or motor compressor and external controls. Thermal protection shuts down the motor when excessive heat is generated within the motor circuit. This safety feature stops when the temperature rises before it burns out the motor. Thermal protectors usually reset themselves once the motor has cooled to a safe operating temperature. It's inconvenient to have a motor shut down due to a tripped thermal limiter, but it's certainly better than having to replace the motor due to overheating. Also, a shutdown can alert you to a problem with the motor or connected equipment, or a problem with the load on the motor. When the motor fails to start or overheats during operation, it may indicate that the motor has reached the end of its life and must be replaced. But usually the fault is not on the motor at all. For example, a load attached to the motor may have obstructions that cause the load to be excessive and cause heat to build up in the motor.
