Jamaal Wilkes Lakers Jersey , Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- About 8,000 people have been placed in the evacuation centers on Ambae, an island of Vanuatu after the island's Lombenben volcano erupted over the past days, and the evacuees are now short of food, water and other basic supplies.
According to the website of Vanuatu's Daily Post on Wednesday, 35 evacuation centers have been set up in the west and east of the island, but they are overcrowded and more evacuees are still arriving.
Most of the island's population has been relocated as the volcano at its center continues to erupt, covering the island in ash.
A government spokesperson said on Wednesday that international aid agencies were helping, and the Council of Ministers would consider asking other countries for support if the eruption worsens - which was hard to predict.
The volcano that towers 1,500 meters above Ambae has been rumbling for weeks, but on Saturday, it suddenly started belching ash and flashes of lava in the middle of the night.
The volcano is reportedly still going to erupt, and it has been destructive as trees and crops are dying. Over the past few days, authorities have been evacuating people in the north and south of the island to the east and west using whatever resources they had.
Ships hopped along the coast, while fully packed trucks made their way across the island's narrow, winding and bumpy tracks. Others walked as far as 20 km through swirling ash to safety.
The disaster coordinator for the Penama Provincial government Manuel Ure said on Wednesday that the evacuees in the evacuation centers were in desperate need of water, sanitation and hygiene.
He said that the island, which relied on rain tanks, was already short of water, and the ash fall has contaminated what's left, and those who haven't been evacuated now need support as they faced continuous challenge.
The government had declared a state of emergency, releasing nearly 2 million U.S. dollars for supplies and other support.
Vanuatu's director of the National Disaster Management Office, Shadrack Welegtabit, said on Wednesday that a government vessel was deployed from the country's capital city of Port Vila, packed with water, food, tents and other supplies.
Ambae's Lombenben is believed to be one of the most dangerously active volcanoes in the world and the Vanuatu authorities were also reportedly preparing for the possibility that the volcano eruption could get worse. If the alert level was raised from four to five, the entire island may have to be evacuated.
The last significant eruption on the Ambae island happened in 2005.

HARARE， Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwe's all-time Olympic champion and swimming sensation Kirsty Coventry is out to make history once again.
Having won seven of Zimbabwe's eight Olympic medals since independence in 1980， Coventry has once again set her eyes on winning medals at the forthcoming Rio Olympic Games.
The Olympic swimming champion has qualified for her 5th and final Olympic Games which begin in Rio de Janeiro on Friday to cap her incredible sporting journey that has inspired many young athletes in Africa and beyond.
Coventry was born and bred in Zimbabwe where she attended high school before moving to the United States where she furthered her education while honing her swimming skills at the same time.
It has been said that the swimming career of Coventry benefited immensely from the state-of-the-art facilities provided at Auburn University in Alabama where she studied.
With a strong passion for the sport， Coventry's maiden Olympic Games was Sydney in 2000 when she was just 17. In 2004， she won her first Olympic gold medal in Athens as well as silver and bronze. The moment marked the beginning of a record-breaking athletic career which has seen her ultimately becoming one of the world's highest achieving female swimmers.
Coventry went on to win four more medals in the Beijing Olympics in 2008， including retaining the gold medal in her specialty event， the 200m backstroke.
After the 2008 Olympics performance， she was hailed as one of Zimbabwe's greatest heroes， and called a national treasure by the head of the country's Olympic Committee. President Robert Mugabe also awarded her 100，000 U.S. dollars cash for her Olympic medal wins， and called her a "golden girl".
Coventry's extraordinary performance has been acknowledged by many the world over， but more importantly in Africa and her native Zimbabwe where swimming as a sport still faces many hurdles.
"Twice crowned Olympic champion， and with seven Olympic medals， Kirsty has won more individual Olympic medals than any female swimmer in history. She is also， without doubt， Africa's most successful Olympic athlete，" reads a statement on the website of her "Kirsty Coventry Academy" that she established in 2015 to address drowning problems and empower individuals through sports training programs.
The now married Coventry has already made history but still aspires to break a new record at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. She shares the record of seven individual medals with Hungarian swimmer Krisztina Egerszegi and she could possibly become one of the first female swimmers to win eight individual medals.
She is carrying the nation's hopes at Rio de Janeiro， where she is billed to compete in the women's 200m backstroke， women's 100m backstro.
