FUT Hero items are scarce and are therefore highly valuable. They are each associated with a player who has made an important contribution to their team or is a fan favourite due to one or more reasons. A Hero item is available for thousands of FUT coins per piece in the market for virtual transfers or can be acquired by purchasing packs, where there is a slim chance of winning one.
So when EA mistakenly released a pack which included a tradeable Hero item at a low price of 250 FUT coins, the market was struck by an inflow of cheap Heroes that caused it to drop and wiping out the value claimed by the more rare items.
Players holding onto rare Heroes started selling them when they noticed prices dropping and this put more fuel into the fire. This is understandable, though given that rarer Hero items can fetch hundreds of dollars when sold through third-party platforms.
The mistake has been corrected and the pack was made available for about 25 minutes, but the damage has been done. EA has yet to offer a statement on the situation, and as the market has begun to recover, the damage appears to be irreversible, and it remains to be seen what EA can do to rectify the situation.
