BANGKOK Texas Rangers Hoodie , Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- A herd of wild elephants has been keeping disturbing a village in northeastern Thailand for a week, bringing sleepless nights for villagers, local media reported Sunday.


Fields and crops of a village in Nakhorn Rachasima province have been destroyed by five elephants. Locals said the herd spends the day time in dense forests and ventures out to their fields at night, forcing the villagers to take turn to keep watch the move of the animals nightly.


Soldiers have been dispatched to the area to help the villagers keep the rampaging herd from intruding into the hamlet.


Officials are busy trying to keep the herd from entering the villages. No injured has been reported so far.


Elephant attacks are common in Thailand, a country with rich forests where the population of elephants is more than 2,700.


In May, a woman was kicked and killed by wild elephants while she was tapping rubber trees in a plantation in Chachoengsao, a province east to Bangkok in south-central Thailand.


Wild elephants destroying crops and ferociously chasing villagers are reported every year.

GENEVA, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Switzerland is planning toreinforce its data safety on the Internet against hacker strikes,including introducing fines of up to 250,000 Swiss francs (259,000U.S. dollars) for violations of security rules, the governmentrevealed on Friday.


The Swiss Defense Ministry said Friday that it foiled a malwarecyber attack in July which was similar to that used in other globalhacking campaigns, while on the same day the Justice Ministry alsopresented plans for improved data protection.


The cyber attack was carried out with the Turla malware, asophisticated virus used for cyber-espionage on several servers ofthe Defense Ministry and a contractor of the Foreign Ministry inJuly, according to the authorities.


The Turla spyware, detected in 2014, is suspected of havinginfected hundreds of government computers and military targetsacross Europe and the Middle East. The government, however,declined to give details on the origin of the attack, or saywhether any damage including data theft had occurred, but bothministries have filed criminal complaints and an investigation isunderway.


In December 2015, the state-owned armament and technology groupRuag fell victim to an attack with the Turla virus, losing nearly20 GB of data. Several IT systems of the federal administrationhave also been targeted by computer hackers over the past threeyears.


Also on Friday, Justice Minister Simonetta Sommaruga presentedproposals to boost data protection while safeguarding the datatransfer between Swiss companies in the European Union.


The proposals include increasing transparency on dataprocessing, introducing fines of up to 250,000 Swiss francs forviolations of cyber-security rules, as well as increased powers forthe government's data protection and information commissioner.


The proposal also required that companies collecting data havelegal obligations to inform consumers about the use of theinformation, which is expected to meet resistance in parliament.Enditem
