With the Deerupt Runner, however, the approach was a bit different, with the design team honing in on a single feature, rather than an existing silhouette, to inform the entire process.

Invented by former Nike employee – and Bill Bowerman protégé – Bill Dellinger, the namesake webbing was first used on the 1979 adidas Marathon trainer, one of the last designs overseen by Adi Dassler himself. Since then it has become an adidas hallmark for its trail running silhouettes, from the Oregon and its Ultra Tech variant, through the New York and onto more recent styles like the F/1.4.

The two layers of differing mesh provide extra flexibility and a subtle amount of compression to the foot, as well as a uniquely dimensional visual aspect that’s certain to turn heads.
