Avana is a medication primarily used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). Its active ingredient is Avanafil. Avanafil belongs to a class of medications called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. The Avana mechanism of action of Avanafil involves blocking the action of the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5, which is responsible for the breakdown of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in the corpus cavernosum of the penis. During sexual stimulation, nitric oxide is released into the erectile tissue of the penis, which activates the enzyme guanylate cyclase. This enzyme increases levels of cGMP, which relaxes the smooth muscles of the corpus cavernosum and allows blood to flow into the penile arteries, causing an erection. PDE5 inhibitors like Avana inhibit the breakdown of cGMP, leading to increased levels of cGMP and prolonged relaxation of the penile smooth muscles. This results in improved blood flow to the penis, facilitating and maintaining an erection during sexual activity. It's worth noting that sexual stimulation is still required for Avanafil to be effective.
