It depends on the weather and how much protection you want.
Let's assume that you have a jacket and a coat with similar insulation for warmth.
The coat will cover your ass and provide you with more protection from the elements then a jacket will. The coat, in the form of a parka with a hood is the extreme weather choice.
A jacket will keep your core warm and give you more maneuverability but your rear end will be exposed which is only a problem in very cold and/or windy conditions. You can wear a jacket in -40 but it is not ideal for long periods outside.
Winter is not one temperature from start to end. There are very cold days and more milder days. Windy days and calm days.
You should have a variety of jackets and coats to span the variation in winter weather.

Well, as it was saud before depends on your preferences. Still I would rather advise you to refer to this resource dufflecoatshop.com for purchases of duffle coats in the future or this winter. The average price is around £149. I simply adore the style and the fact that it is very warm on it. Simply give it a try. Good luck
